Like gluten free pizza rolls, not to mention gluten free calzones and baguettes! That’s why, when a reader asked if my gfJules Gluten Free Pizza Crust Mix could be used to make gluten free pizza rolls, I was sure that it would. She excitedly wrote me back with yummy photos from her experimentation, so I couldn’t wait to try for myself.

Many gluten free pizza rolls later … my kids, my husband and I are all big fans of this fun recipe! Now that school lunches are on my mind again, I’m thinking these would be a fantastic fit for a thermos, too! They’d also make great party food. The possibilities are endless.

Roll whatever pizza fillings you love into these fun gluten free rolls and bring on the pizza with even more yummy sauce and perfectly proportioned crust in every bite. It’s like a savory cinnamon bun — revolutionary!

Gluten Free Pizza Rolls

Yield: 8 pizza rolls

Gluten Free Pizza Rolls are a fun twist on the traditional! Use gfJules Gluten Free Pizza Crust Mix or recipe and your favorite fillings to make Pizza Night delicious in a whole new way!

Ingredients

OR

  • 1 1/2 cups of gfJules™ All-Purpose Gluten-Free Flour
  • 3 Tbs. milk powder (dairy or non-dairy) OR almond meal OR plain GF potato flakes
  • 1/4 tsp. oregano
  • Pinch or two of garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

PLUS

  • 2 egg whites or egg substitute, room temperature (4 Tbs. or 1/4 cup whites)
  • 2 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp. apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 1/4 tsp. rapid rise yeast (1 packet – included with pizza crust mix) **for yeast-free see note
  • additional olive oil to brush onto the rolls
  • pizza sauce (use my homemade recipe) & toppings of choice (dairy-free cheese recommendations here)

Instructions

Bring all ingredients to room temperature. If warming egg whites, place whole eggs in a bowl of very warm water for a few minutes while gathering other ingredients.

Whisk together dry ingredients except yeast; set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, combine egg whites, olive oil, cider vinegar.

Using a stand mixer (preferably), slowly add in the dry ingredient mix.  Gradually add water or club soda (for yeast-free) to get a firm but very sticky dough that can still be spread.  If using yeast, pour in the yeast packet and beat on high for an additional 2-3 minutes.  (Note: this recipe may be mixed by hand in a large bowl, using a fork or wooden spoon).

1- Liberally dust a clean counter or pastry mat with gfJules™ Flour.

2- Turn the dough ball out onto the floured surface and then roll gently to cover all sides so it’s not so sticky.

3-4 Gently roll the dough out in every direction to 1/8-1/4 inch thick.

5- Spread with pizza sauce to the edges of the dough.

6- Sprinkle toppings all over the dough.

7- Using a bench scraper or a spatula, begin rolling the dough from one side to the other to form a log.

8- Cut each roll approximately 2 inches across.

9- Lift each roll using a scraper or spatula and place in an oiled baking pan. Makes approximately 6 rolls.

Cover with foil and place in a warm oven (preheated to 175ºF then turned off works well) for 15-30 minutes

Brush rolls with olive oil to remove excess flour and also help them to brown lightly during the bake.

Preheat oven to 425ºF and bake covered for 10 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 5 minutes. Top with additional sauce before serving, if desired.

Notes

** For Yeast-Free, discard yeast packet if using gfJules Pizza Crust Mix.

Add 1 Tablespoon baking powder
1 heaping teaspoon baking soda
Use 1/4 cup club soda instead of water

  1. I only have access to a combo microwave/convection oven. How well will baking in convection oven work? GF pizza from freezer at grocery do not heat up very well.

    • Hi Patrick, it’s hard to say. All depends on the convection setting and how well it cooks. Unlike frozen pizzas, you don’t want these rolls to get crispy on the bottom, so they would probably do better in your combo oven than frozen pizza would. I hope that helps!

    • The middle rack will be best — it will cook too quickly if it’s too close to the top. (Great question, btw!).

  2. Can I use potato starch rather than potato flakes? I’m still looking for gluten-free potato flakes (I live in Ontario, Canada). My son has food intolerances to gluten, milk, eggs, and almonds. Thanks!

    • Hi Julianne – potato starch is very different from potato flakes, so I wouldn’t recommend making that substitution here. Can you find potato flakes on line? I’ve ordered the Idahoan brand here in the States, but there has to be something GF available. Maybe your local grocer could order for you? Or you could look for the non-dairy milk powder as another option.

    • If yours are like mine Brianna, my kids ask for pizza more than once a week, so if I give in, this is a great option to switch it up a bit. And the kids love them!
