I took my kids to our favorite pumpkin farm to pick pumpkins today. You see, the 100lb pumpkin we bought for them wasn't enough. Did you miss it on Twitter? Ok, here it is again.
It really was 100lbs (and don't worry, Jeff lifted it for me – I got some concerned comments on Facebook!).
Anyway, I took the kids to the pumpkin farm today and we bought 7 pumpkins … 7 because there are 6 people who basically live in our house and I also had to have a special pie-baking one, of course! So, I lugged these pumpkins up to the big red barn where they weighed them (the added bonus of lugging them all the way to the big red barn is apparently that you have to pay by the pound for what you just exerted yourself to carry … yes, all the way to the big red barn….).
Ok, so now we have 7 pumpkins, including the one for me to bake plus the 100 lb pumpkin already on my front porch…. and all my 9-year old son can say is that our house isn't "scary" enough. Hmph.
Want to know how to bake your special pie-baking pumpkin and what to put it in?? Stay tuned, 'cause I'm baking mine tomorrow, or my son says he'll be "really, really mad at me!" (what does that mean!?!?).
In the meantime, check out my recipes (yes, recipeS — dairy-free and even crust-free and egg-free options!) for gluten-free pumpkin pie in my totally updated 2010 Thanksgiving Ebook (coming back soon)!
Whether or not you bake your own special pie pumpkin to perfection for that special pie … you can always buy pumpkin puree in a can (not pumpkin pie filling!), and although I always prefer organic, anything but pie filling will do!
