With the holidays upon us, I thought I would share my super simple, 6 ingredient, no bake gluten free rum balls recipe. These are so festive that you may just want to extend your holiday-ing a bit longer.
Seriously, these babies are the very definition of quick and easy. No fancy decorating skills or baking techniques required, and everyone will still be grabbing for them at the holiday party.
Oh, and did I mention that there’s an option to sneak a secret ingredient into these gluten free rum balls to make them just a tad bit healthy!?!?
Don’t feel like you have to tell anyone else, but it sure does put a smile on my face to pop an extra rum ball and know I’m getting protein, Omega 3s, probiotics and even greens in each little unassuming rum ball.
If you opt for the healthy-ish version, the secret ingredient is gluten free protein powder — either chocolate or chai flavor. I’ve tried this recipe using OWYN** vegan, gluten free dark chocolate protein powder for ALL the chocolate in this recipe, and I even rolled some of the rum balls in more protein powder — it was THAT good.
Try that with ordinary protein powders that can be gritty or leave a chemical aftertaste — no can do. It’s really a testament to how good OWYN tastes that it can literally stand in for straight cocoa but actually be full of so much extra good stuff. Make sure whatever gluten free protein powder you choose actually tastes good enough on its own so you don’t ruin this delicate recipe!
Of course you can always simply use baking cocoa in place of protein powder, but it’s something to strive for … next time. Because you’ll want to make this recipe again, I assure you!
Quick, easy, no-bake, gluten free, vegan, protein packed and did I mention RUM!??! What’s not to like? Nothing. That’s why you’ll be making this recipe again and again!
And since these gems have rum in them, let me take a moment to tell you that rum, like other distilled alcohols, is gluten free. It’s super nice and reassuring though, when the manufacturer takes the time to tell you that it’s gluten free right on the bottle (thanks, Cap’n).
For more information on safe gluten free libations, hop to my super popular (especially at this time of year) article all about beer, liquor, wine and more. If you’d prefer these balls less boozy, just sub in your favorite mulled or spiced apple cider.
Cheers!

- 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
- 1 cup sifted confectioner's sugar (or Swerve confectioner's sugar replacement)
- 3 Tbs. baking cocoa (Dutched) OR gluten free chocolate protein powder OWYN dark chocolate protein powder
- 1/4 cup spiced rum (or apple cider)
- 3 Tbs. agave nectar, coconut nectar OR honey (not vegan)
- 1 Tbs. water
- confectioner's sugar, OWYN, coconut, gluten free sprinkles ... OR other dry ingredients for rolling the balls in
Instructions
- In a large food processor, process cereal until uniformly crumby. Transfer to a bowl and process the pecans in the food processor until finely chopped. Return the cereal to the processor bowl with the chopped pecans; add sugar and cocoa powder/chocolate protein powder. Pulse just to combine the dry ingredients.

I’ve always made bourbon or rum balls for the Holidays but unfortunately I haven’t been able to eat them due to them NOT being Gluten Free. They are an old recipe. How excited I was when I saw this lovely recipe. I will be making these very soon. I am beyond happy that I can make something that I’ve been missing for the Holidays and I don’t have to worry about eating it! Thank you so much for all of your effort you put in to giving us amazing Gluten Free recipes!!
I’m so happy that you’ll be putting this recipe to good use, Estelle! I think next time I make these, I’ll make them your way — with bourbon instead! Sounds super yummy!!!
Happy New Year!

You’ve “partnered with OWYN” ??? Oh, who would’ve guessed? The whole damn posting is paid advertising for same.
Hi Jeff, I am transparent about the rare posts I share when they are sponsored, so I’m glad you weren’t confused about that. I hope you also read the part about the fact that when a post of mine is sponsored, it helps me to continue to generate content for all my readers to consume and benefit from, for free.
I just made these gluten free rum balls again last night for a party and was out of OWYN, so I used Dutched cocoa powder as a substitute (as noted in the recipe) and they were equally delicious. So please don’t feel like you cannot enjoy a recipe if you don’t have OWYN on-hand; I always give other ingredient options. Happy baking!

Classy reply. I’m impressed with your response, this recipe, and you.
Thank you. I sincerely appreciate it. I never want anyone to feel as if I’m being less than transparent. Where I believe an ingredient is essential to the results, as shown, it will be noted.
Happy holidays!

Yay! a wheat free holiday treat! I really like these, the cereal/nut combo gives them crunch (although after they soak up the rum they might not crunch anymore) and I can taste the chocolate. I’m not sure how many of these are going to make it to tomorrow’s party….
Hahaha – true! We’ve had a few issues with these going TOO fast, as well! Happy holidays!

I’ve made a version using finely processed GF vanilla wafers and a variety of mini bar size liqueurs like rum, Bailey’s, amaretto, Kailua, etc.
Sounds yummy, Roberta!

I’m always looking for recipes that use agave nectar 🙂 These look amazing! Perfect for the holidays 🙂
Great! So glad it will be useful for you!
