This is Back-to-School Week in our house, or “that week,” as my kids have been calling it, since the “S”-word has been taboo lately (and I don’t mean Summer!).
Aside from getting all my mom ducks in a row with the requisite clothes and “S”-supply shopping, planning for interesting school lunches and gluten-free breakfasts I can make the night before, I’ve also been doing all kinds of laundry to prepare. I’m somewhat reluctantly recalling that during the “S”-year, I do lots more laundry than during the summer. Lots.
Uniforms and gym class are enough as it is, but as we inch towards fall and winter, there are more layers of things to get dirty. Oh, and it’s been proven time and again by both my children that it’s much easier to put your clothes in the laundry bin than to fold them and put them away … so there’s that.
If you’re anything like me, and preparing for the laundry onslaught — or perhaps you’re already in the throes of it? — you’ll appreciate knowing about Molly’s Suds®. I discovered the brand at the Gluten Free Blogger Retreat earlier this year, and quickly fell in love with it. Not just because it’s another company founded by a mom (like me!), but because it has great products and a great mission:
“Our company uses the purest of ingredients to formulate products without carcinogens or known human toxins. We strive to be good stewards of the Earth and give back to our community and those in need.”
I already was using dye-free, perfume-free detergents because of sensitive skin issues in our family, but I learned from Molly’s Suds that there are other, even more important reasons to avoid them.
Living gluten-free, we think more than most people do about ingredients in our foods. In my gfJules™ products, I use only certified gluten-free and kosher ingredients; I source my rice from California so that arsenic levels will be minimized; and every ingredient in my flour is non-GMO.
I also work hard to make safe and healthy foods for my family at home. But what about non-food products that also affect our health? Researching it further, I learned that some laundry detergent ingredients are not completely biodegradable and leach into our drinking water. These same chemicals have been banned in Canada and Europe because they imitate estrogen hormones and have even been found to change the sex of fish after exposure!
Questionable and known dangerous chemicals are found so many places in our daily lives, it only makes sense to reduce our exposure to them wherever we can. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) notes that:
“[T]here is no requirement that companies list the ingredients in household cleaning products. As a result companies can use highly toxic chemicals and consumers have difficulty finding low hazard products. The use of vague ingredient descriptions like “surfactant,” “cleaning agent,” or “preservative” on cleaning products does not provide adequate hazard data for consumers on what chemicals they are putting in their homes. These terms could encompass a wide variety of actual ingredients, ranging from low hazard to highly toxic.”
In Molly’s Suds products there are no harsh or leaching chemicals and they rinse clean without fragrance or dyes. And Molly’s also makes (Certified Cruelty Free by Leaping Bunny) wool dryer balls which are hand wound in Nepal and Fair Trade, in lieu of using dryer sheets, which have been known to contain chemicals and fragrances which can be harmful and build up on clothes.
I’m loving her products not only because of all they DON’T contain, but because they WORK! Personally, I really like the All Sport (did I mention I have a 16 year old son??) and of course the wool dryer balls, but I want you to get to try them all for yourself! So I partnered with Molly’s Suds to offer two lucky winners these great products (retail value $75)*:
