Naan is one of the world’s oldest and most beloved flatbreads, known for its soft, pliable texture and slightly charred, bubbly surface. You’ve probably had naan bread in an Indian or Middle Eastern restaurant — but it probably wasn’t gluten-free — which is why having a homemade version will come in handy.
Everyone loves naan bread — once you try this easy homemade gluten-free naan bread recipe, you’ll be looking for excuses to make it for all kinds of meals!
How Do I Make Gluten Free Naan Bread at Home?
Originating in South and Central Asia, naan has become a restaurant favorite across the globe, often served warm alongside Indian curries, dips, and grilled meats. Its name comes from the Persian word for bread baked on hot pebbles — an accurate description for the blistered look of this bread which is most often now cooked on the surface of a searingly hot tandoor clay oven. This recipe doesn’t require you to have a tandoor oven, fortunately, but makes use of the skillet you probably do have in your drawer.
Most naan recipes also use yeast, so they require a bit more time and effort; this gluten-free naan recipe uses baking soda and baking powder instead, which means you can be enjoying them with your meal in under 30 minutes!
I’ve also given you two ways to enjoy this homemade naan, both completely gluten free:
-
Gluten Free Naan Bread with gfJules All Purpose Gluten Free Flour – soft, tender, and chewy, with absolutely no grit.

-
Grain Free Naan Bread with gfJules Grain-Free Nada Flour – for those who need a grain-free alternative without sacrificing flavor or texture.
Both versions cook up beautifully soft and pliable, perfect for tearing, dipping, and wrapping.

Whether you’re serving it with a flavorful curry, enjoying it as a base for flatbread pizzas, or simply snacking on it warm from the skillet, this gluten-free naan recipe brings authentic flavor and texture to your kitchen, quickly and easily.
In fact, I bet you’ll be finding all sorts of ways to use this recipe — maybe for breakfast?
Gluten-Free Huevos Rancheros Naan, anyone?
A friend of mine even bakes these and takes them with her when she eats out at Indian restaurants so she’s not missing out on naan with her meal. Great thinking!!

Gluten Free Naan Bread Recipe (Soft & Chewy)
Equipment
Ingredients
- 2 ½ (202) cups (grams) gfJules All-Purpose Gluten-Free Flour OR (165 grams) gfJules Grain-Free Nada Flour
- 1 Tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon sea salt or kosher salt
- 2 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- 1 cup plain yogurt like SoDelicious coconut yogurt
- 2 Tablespoons warm water only add with gfJules All-Purpose unless dough too crumbly with Nada
- Chopped parsley optional
- 2-3 Tablespoons butter/dairy-free butter/ghee melted
Instructions
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the gfJules Flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Use the whisk attachment to combine everything at a low speed.
- Add the olive oil, yogurt, and warm water. Start the mixer on low and once everything is combined, turn the mixer onto medium speed and allow the dough to mix for 2-3 minutes.
- While the dough is mixing, start preheating a dry cast iron skillet over medium heat.
- You should end up with a soft dough that is not sticky, but not dry.
- Divide the dough into 6 equal portions.
- On a clean work surface, pat or roll each dough ball out into a circle or oval. The dough shouldn’t be too sticky; lightly dust your work surface with gfJules Flour, if needed.
- Run a large spatula under each naan to ensure that it can easily be lifted from your work surface. Stack naans with a layer of parchment paper between each one as you continue to prepare the dough portions, and cover with a towel to keep them from drying out.
- Check to see if your skillet has preheated by sprinkling a few drops of water onto the surface; the water should dance across the surface and may sizzle and pop.
- Place one naan bread into the hot skillet. Allow it to cook for about 1 minute, you may see small bubbles form on the bread. Flip the naan and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Each side should have nice char marks.
- Transfer the cooked naan to a clean towel and cover the naan with the towel to keep it soft and warm while you finish cooking the other naan breads.
- Brush the cooked gluten-free naan with the melted butter/ghee and sprinkle with the chopped parsley. Serve warm.
