You don’t even need a recipe card to make gluten free bread crumbs — just freeze slices of homemade gluten free bread and bring out as many as you need at a time (one regular slice of homemade gluten free bread usually yields approximately 1/4 cup of bread crumbs; store-bought gluten free bread has smaller slices).

Break into large pieces and place in a food processor or blender, processing until the crumbs are the size you like. This method makes plain gluten free breadcrumbs. If you’d rather have more of a “panko” crumb, add herbs as detailed in the recipe below.

Use any of my gluten free bread recipes (search the recipes tab for “bread”) or my easy gfJules™ Bread Mix for the yummiest finished product, but you can even use the store-bought frozen bread that might not make such a great sandwich! Such breads often start out fairly dry, so they make fine croutons, but slice larger pieces in case they crumble too much and simply become bread crumbs!

Never let a homemade gluten free bread loaf go to waste, plus save money by making your own gluten free croutons or breadcrumbs! Freeze any extra bread you can’t eat within the first few days, and you’ll always have what you need for croutons or breadcrumbs at the ready.

Think Thanksgiving stuffing, breaded fish or nuggets, mozzarella sticks … the possibilities are endless when you have a great recipe for gluten free croutons or bread crumbs and you always have leftover gluten free bread in the freezer, ready to pulse and go!

Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 thick slices of gluten-free bread
  • 2 Tbs. olive oil
  • 1 tsp. dried oregano (optional)
  • 1 tsp. dried basil (optional)

Instructions

Slice the bread into 3/4 inch cubes and lay out onto a foil-lined baking sheet.

Bake at 375º F for 15 minutes, or until crispy on the edges.

Transfer the cubes to a large skillet with heated oil and toss in the oil, sautéing until the oil is absorbed and the croutons are crunchy.

Toss in the herbs and transfer to a bowl for serving with salad or gazpacho.

(Process the cubes in a food processor or blender to make bread crumbs)

  1. That’s why I have a lot of croutons. lol I make plain or season them with an Italian seasoning blend. Like you stated, they are just handy to have with little to no waste for those times when you blow it or it gets too old and stales.

However, I’ll use your method next time I make them. I have been baking mine vice crisping them up in some oil or ghee in a skillet.

To substitute bread crumbs for croutons in a recipe, what is the appproximate conversion?
