Making semi-homemade gluten free pizza sauce or pasta sauce is easy, and it’s so much better to know that you’re making something nutritious for your family. Most commercial pasta sauces are loaded with salt and with sugar — and even other unsavories like high fructose corn syrup — so making from scratch is a fantastic alternative.
Another great reason to make your own gluten free pizza or pasta sauce is that you can add more or less savory herbs to suit your taste and sample as you’re cooking to get the flavor just right!
This gluten free recipe makes 3-4 cups of tomato sauce, so double if you’re making more than one pizza or a larger pot of pasta.
Gluten Free Pasta Sauce or Pizza Sauce
An easy, semi-homemade pasta or pizza sauce recipe that lets you control the sugar, sodium and seasoning!
Ingredients
- 1 28-oz can whole or crushed tomatoes (or 10-12 whole tomatoes, peeled)
- 1 small can tomato sauce
- 1/2 onion, finely diced
- 1 Tbs. olive oil
- ÂĽ cup red wine
- 1 Tbs. honey or agave (optional)
- garlic powder (1 tsp. or more, to taste)
- 1/2 Tbs. dried or 1 Tbs. fresh oregano
- 1 Tbs. dried or 2 Tbs. fresh basil leaves
- 1-2 tsp. crushed red pepper
- salt & pepper, to taste
Instructions
This recipe is easily made in a blender or food processor or in a large bowl using an immersion blender.
Process the can of tomatoes or whole, peeled tomatoes until smooth. For pizza sauce, the sauce should be thicker, so pour the tomatoes through a sieve to drain the excess water.
Sauté diced onion in oil until lightly browned.
Pour the processed tomatoes into a saucepan and add the tomato sauce, wine, honey and sautéed onion. Cook over medium heat until warmed through. Add remaining ingredients, tasting until the flavor is pleasing.
Continue cooking until ready to add to pasta or use for pizza. Otherwise, allow to cool and transfer to a jar, refrigerating for use later.
