Anytime is a good time for ice cream, am I right?! And, I daresay if that ice cream was even a tad bit good for you, it might make anytime a GREAT time for ice cream!
That’s why I’m so excited to share this quick and easy homemade gluten free vegan ice cream recipe with you.
I’ve made it several times now and each time I’ve wondered why I haven’t posted the recipe for you to enjoy as well. It’s so darned easy, which makes it the kind of recipe that I often don’t end up sharing because it takes so much more time to shoot pictures and write the recipe than it does to make it … and certainly more time than it takes to eat it!
But those are the behind-the-scenes recipe author issues that I needn’t bore you with. I’m sure all you really care about is the ice cream itself, so I’ll get back to it!
This gluten free vegan ice cream recipe satisfies any ice cream craving and makes ice cream available to most anyone, even with food allergies or dietary restrictions. Seriously, how many times have you or someone you know and love been craving ice cream only to have to turn it down because it’s made with dairy or has some kind of gluten containing cookie or filler in it?
Homemade is always best, even when it comes to ice cream! (or I suppose I should say “nice cream” or some other silly name like “ice mylk”, when we all really know it’s still the frozen treat we know and love).
This is exactly the kind of recipe you need as the days grow longer and hotter: a stay cool, easy and allergy-friendly recipe just made for sharing. This seven ingredient mix whips up in no time with an ice cream freezer.
Which reminds me of how my family used to make ice cream with the older hand crank models. I must say that the electric motor is a game changer, and I’m sure you’d agree if you’ve ever been on hand crank ice cream maker duty!
Do you have another kind of ice cream maker? I’d love to hear how this recipe works made another way. It sets up beautifully in this White Mountain old fashioned ice cream maker, so I’m sure that it will work in other types of machines too.
If you don’t already have an ice cream maker, one like ours is a fun one for BBQs and outdoor parties — it’s one of those gather ’round and watch it work kinda things. It would also make a great Father’s Day gift, if you’re in need of ideas!
You could also take this simple recipe and use it IN other recipes like my gluten free Ice Cream Cake or these fun gluten free Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Sandwiches. Or even in these patriotic gluten free Red Velvet Ice Cream Sandwiches!
Also feel free to add anything you like in with these ice cream ingredients. Like gluten free cookie dough, for example — SO good!!!
A note on ingredients: I’ve used almond milk, soy milk, cashew milk or coconut milk beverages to make this ice cream, and they all work well. But I’ve also used OWYN (Only What You Need) Protein Drink.* This vegan, gluten free and soy-free protein drink not only adds flavor (I’ve made this recipe with their vanilla, dark chocolate and cold brew coffee flavors), but also 20 grams of plant-based protein, fiber, vegan omega 3, and a superfoods greens blend!
I highly recommend OWYN as a drink on its own or in recipes like this one. In fact, just search “OWYN” in the search bar at the top of every page and you’ll find lots of other ways I’ve incorporated this tasty dose of nutrition in my baking!
I also recommend making a batch of homemade gluten free waffle cones for this delicious frosty treat!
Nestled inside a fresh-made homemade gluten free waffle cone, it would be hard to beat this delectable cure to the hot days ahead. Add a dash of gluten free sprinkles, and you’ve got yourself a party!

Can we use fresh raw milk in this recipe? Do we have to have the protein drink? Could we use something else?
Hi Peggy, you should be able to use whatever milk you have on hand in place of the protein drink, as long as you’re still using the coconut milk to help it thicken. The protein drink does help give the ice cream some body, but if it’s really frozen, it should still work for you. Let me know what you decide to do and how it turns out!
